Australian Shepherds - Breed History

Australian Shepherds were developed in the USA. The dogs of this breed traveled from Australia to the US together with the flocks of the Merino sheep and the Basque Shepherds in the 1800s. These dogs were successfully used as herding dogs. Australian Shepherds show up frequently in pictures in the 1800s and the early 1900s.

Originally, Australian Shepherds came to Australia from Spain.There is an idea that Australian Shepherds were derived from the Smithfield and some type of Collie. The name came about because of the believed link with this country.

The AKC recognized the Australian Shepherd in 1992. The US Australian shepherd Association was formed in 1991. Nowadays, the breed is quite popular family companion all over the world.

Australian Shepherds - Socialization

Australian Shepherds are sometimes called one-person dogs. They do not tend to accept all people as their friends. They are selective. This feature makes them a wonderful protector of their home and their family. It is important to expose a young Aussie to as many situations as possible in order to have a well-behaved adult.

Australian Shepherds - Training

The Australian Shepherd puppy should be taught some obedience. The Aussie is an extremely quick learner and enjoys the mental challenge of learning what you have to teach him. You are advised to look for obedience training classes in your area or read some of the books on this subject. Obedient Australian Shepherds are a great joy to handle.
