Australian Shepherds - Health Problems in the Breed
Purebred Australian Shepherds should be OFA-certified for hips and elbows. Each Australian Shepherd puppy should have its eyes examined by an ophthalmologist. The breed can be prone to low thyroid disease, allergies and skin conditions, heart disease and seizures.

There are several genetic eye problems in the breed. They are related to merle breeding. Progressive Retinal Atrophy may lead to blindness.
Australian Shepherds - General Care
The Australian Shepherd's coat is relatively easy to groom. Regular brushing and occasional bathing can be sufficient as grooming means. The breed is an average shedder.
In order to stay in good health, the Australian Shepherd ought to get a considerable amount of exercise stimulating both its mind and body. The Australian Shepherd's owners should understand the real purpose of working dogs and try to provide a quality life for them. Australian Shepherds are not recommended for apartment life. These active dogs will do best if a spacious yard is available.

If you are interested in adopting an Australian Shepherd, acquire specific information on available rescue dogs. Fill out an application form. A volunteer will check out all the references and discuss with a potential adopter what exactly they are looking for in a dog. One of volunteers will pay a home visit before your application is approved. Rescue organizations try to find the most suitable homes for their adoptees. If there are toddlers in the family, or the life style is such that the dog will have to stay unattended for a long time, rescue Australian Shepherds are not the best option.
