Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd dog is naturally very intelligent and hard working. This breed originated for herding and guarding the cattle, that’s why its typical characteristics are intelligence, agility and power. True breed fanciers pay attention only to the working abilities and trainability of these dogs, but not to their appearance. Although, nowadays these dogs are also bred for the show ring and have to correspond to the breed standard.

The Australian Shepherd was developed in the USA from the dogs brought from Australia with the Merino sheep they herded. These herding dogs came to Australia from Spain. Very little is known about their origin. Supposedly, the Smithfield dog and some type of the Collie were the ancestors of the Australian Shepherd dog. This breed was known since the 19th century, but the breeders and owners didn’t try to register it. The US Australian Shepherd Association was formed only in 1991. In 1992, the AKC recognized the breed and adopted the breed standard for the breeders to follow.

Most Australian Shepherd dogs are used nowadays for their primary purpose, but some owners keep them as pets and playing companions for children. Australian Shepherds are very devoted, tolerant and naturally protective. They are one-person dogs – a feature that makes them ideal personal protectors. When at work, an Australian Shepherd is alert and self-confident, but when it’s allowed indoors it turns into a gentle pet. These dogs are very people-oriented. Though indoor living is not for them, Australian Shepherds should have an opportunity to be around people at least several hours a day. A dog of this breed living in an apartment will become melancholic and neurotic, even if taken for a walk daily.

It may be difficult for a novice owner to socialize and train a large and intelligent dog. The owner has to expose a puppy to as many situations as possible to make it used to various people and places. Obedience training is a must for every large dog, no matter what it will be used for. Australian Shepherd dogs are quick learners, but they have to be motivated. Inexperienced owners are recommended to find a professional trainer for an Australian Shepherd dog.
