Australian Shepherd Dogs
Australian Shepherd dogs were bred for working with cattle and guarding the property. To perform their basic functions, these dogs should be intelligent, alert, attentive and strong. This breed is characterized by courage and easy-going nature. Australian Shepherds are protective, suspicious of strangers and tolerant of children. Even dogs with no herding experience have a strong herding instinct. They tend to herd children, pets and family members. Without a strong-willed owner, these dogs may become dominating and self-minded. The Australian Shepherd is not the best choice for a first-time owner.
The temperament and working abilities of Australian Shepherd dogs are of primary importance, but many breeders of today also breed for conformation. According to the breed standard, Australian Shepherds should stand between 18 and 23 inches at the withers. The weight of these dogs varies between 40 and 65 pounds. The females should be smaller than males. Australian Shepherds are well balanced and muscular dogs with a large head, deep chest and straight legs. The coat of these dogs can be straight or wavy. The basic coat colors in this breed are red and black; blue is a rare coat color in Australian Shepherds. The usual coat patterns are solid and merle.
There are several things to consider when choosing a dog of this breed. Australian Shepherd dogs are not the easiest ones to own, as they need much time and attention. A dog of this breed should not be left on its own, because it will become bored, neurotic and difficult to deal with. Prior to purchasing a pet of this breed, learn about the purpose and characteristics of the breed in general and think twice if it suits your needs.
To be healthy and happy, these large dogs should have an opportunity to exercise. Indoor living is not for them. Australian Shepherds are better in the country or in a cottage with a large yard. Locking a dog of this breed in the apartment will lead to behavior problems. If a large and strong dog cannot burn off its energy it will look for a way to entertain itself by barking, chewing and destructive behavior. Australian Shepherd dogs appreciate active lifestyle and make good companions in sports and hiking.
